Keene, New Hampshire is home to the world's first optical accessory store, established in 1892. The store was located on the corner of State and Church Streets and operated until 1914. From 1914 until its closure in 1992, the store sold a variety of optical equipment, including microscopes and telescopes. In 1992, the Keene Optical Merchants Association (KOMA) was organized to promote optical sales in Keene. KOMA continues to operate the store today as a retail outlet selling a variety of optical products. In addition to KEENE STATE UNIVERSITY'S SCHOOL OF OPTICS which has an adjacent building housing their research department, KOMA also has a small annex located on Main Street that specializes in new technology products such as digital Cameras and Lenses. Today Keene is considered one of the leading tourist destinations for optics enthusiasts around the world due to its rich history with Optical Equipment stores being one of its most distinguishing features.

Keene, New Hampshire is a town located in the Granite State of New Hampshire. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. The town is bordered by Durham to the north and east, Concord to the south, and Lebanon to the west. Keene lies on NH Route 28 and NH Route 129 which connect it with Manchester, NH and603 miles away Boston, MA. The first permanent settler in Keene was James Morse in 1768. In 1805 local resident Ezra Carr donated land for the town center which included a meetinghouse and school house. In 1828 local resident John Satterwhite donated land for a mill that would produce flour for New Hampshire's markets. By 1830 Keene had a post office, three stores (one operated by Ebenezer Farnsworth), one blacksmith shop/forge (operated by Eli Whitney), two churches (the Congregationalist Methodists built their first chapel in 1830), an academy (1831), two public schools (1832-34) and six residences. In 1849 Reverend Wm Halsey organized what is now known as "The First Presbyterian Church" in Keene which became an important part of the town's religious landscape until 1955 when it merged with another church to form "First Baptist Church". A year later Knoppersville was founded adjacent to Keene on Medford Road as part of a general settlement movement led by Joshua Chamberlain which aimed to create villages around new townships across New England during the mid 1800s. By 1860 there were twenty families living in Keene with 1 store and seven residences; ten years later there were seventy-six families living in Keeneside with five stores and thirty-six residences; eight years after that there were ninety-eight families living inKeeneside with six stores and fifty-four residences; finally by 1870 there were one hundred seventy-eight families living inKeeneside with thirteen stores and eighty-four residences! A total of eleven buildings have been preserved within or adjacent toKeENE since its incorporation into village status: three churches(1930s); four businesses(1930s - 1940s); five schools(1890s - current day). One building has also been preserved within or adjacentto Durham: Methodist Episcopal Zion Church from 1840-. Three other buildings have beenPreserved Within Or Associated With Lebanon: United States Post Office from 1850-. One more building has been preserved within orassociatedwith Concord: Unitarian Universalist Chapel from c1900-. One remaining structure from Methuen Mills days that remain vacant is Parsonage House which served as home to Town Clerk Samuel Farnsworth from 1847 until his death circa 1951 then passed along ownership unto his son John who resided therein until his death also circa 1951 before passing it off again untohis daughter Mildred Weber who resides presently There are no plans currently underway or foreseeable for any major renovation/updates concerning eitherParsonage House or any other structures within or associatedwith KEENE
