In 1830, one vote resulted in admitting Keene as a village; however, it only had a population of about 100 until 1900 when it grew to 3,000 residents through development of industry and commerce including a successful paper mill that produced high quality paper for mailing GPO stationery from 1847 until 1974; also an early producer of electric light bulbs; The water power for these mills came from two natural gas springs that gushed out from under the hills northeast of town near where Nashua Road crosses the Enfield River

The airbase closed in 1946 and the town declined until it regained its former growth after the closure of the airbase.
