The town of Keene was incorporated on February 14, 1868, following a vote by the residents of neighboring communities which had banded together to oppose incorporation into any larger municipality. At its incorporation ceremony, Mayor George Ladd said: "We are here today to organize ourselves into one commonwealth; we have not done so for many years because we thought it would be better for all if each community were self-sufficient." On July 30, 1788, the town of Keene was founded by Captain John Green and his men after they had been driven out of Manchester. The first house in the town was built by Capt. Green on a lot he bought from the Indians. In 1801, the town granted land to George Washington for $1000.
