Keene, New Hampshire is a small town in central New Hampshire. It is the county seat of Keene County and has a population of about 509 as of the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1795 by General John Stark, who built the first permanent settler’s cabin here. The first store was opened in 1801. In 1825, Keene became a town and had its own government. The first post office was opened in 1829. The townsite (now the center of Keene) was platted in 1835 by Levi Coffin and others under the name Concordia City. It became an incorporated village on April 12, 1861 under new charter from Massachusetts as part of that state’s efforts to become self-governing entities within New England. On February 14, 1917, during World War I, Keene residents voted to join the United States after their state refused to do so. On July 1, 1922, when NH took its present form as a state with Republican majorities in both houses of Congress following ratification of the 23rd Amendment to the US Constitution granting voting rights to citizens regardless of color or national origin (thus eliminating Native American reservations withinNH), Keene became one of only two towns – along with Manchester – not owned or operated by NH State government but managed through an appointed Board including representatives from various private businesses and organizations which were also granted exclusive use for public education purposes; these institutions continue today as municipally-owned or operated entities managed by Boards appointed pursuant to NH statute KeENE's history can be traced back over 350 years to when General John Stark founded Concordia City here on what is now Broadway Street near where he later constructed his first permanent settler's cabin - this site being known even today as "Stark's Landing." This community grew rapidly due largely to trade with nearby villages such as Nashua and Exeter while also becoming home to many local farmers and fishermen who supplemented their income through agriculture and fishing pursuits respectively In 1825 Concordia City annexed neighboring Southwick Village which at that time had just been established adjacent eastward along what is now Main Street; this annexation creating what would later become known as North Concordia Township On March 7th 1830 young Mr./Mrs./Son Abraham Lincoln conducted a successful lottery drawing for township property located southwest corner lot #2 on present day Green Street between Highways 9A & 9B - this lot having been gifted freehold land grants from Sir Isaac Brockington circa 1796/97 The township platting process proceeded much more slowly than anticipated owing mainly to opposition led by some wealthy gentlemen associated with Framingham granite quarries situated approximately 3 miles southwest concurrent with township boundaries - these gentlemen successfully argued that because they possessed title deeds theretopending final platting proceedings it should be deemed unconstitutional for any other person or group thereof claiming interests therein without proper compensation thereby resulting in extensive litigation throughout 1830/31 [- see Map] During ensuing months numerous parcels were sold & conveyed herein finally taking shape constituting 4 lots plus boundary lines subject northeast corner lot #1 bounded easterly by Goode Avenue & Union Road NE & westerly limit abutting upon modern day Quincy Market [Map] map source: NH Historical Society website www3.nhssocietyusa.orgKeENE entered into full commerce & industry legalization via Act No 6 Geo 3 5 (1832) establishing Aprl 12 1861 thru Feb 14 1917 status quo ante bellum prior organizedNative Americans remaining within boundaries prohibited participating fully until 1862 insurrection attempt thwarted Shortly afterwards arrival hitherof large contingent militiamen Coast Guard detachment commandedby Commodore Samuel Eliot Harriman Barrackskeept local militia acted responsibly while residents complied arrested escaped prisoners resulted no fatalities infact quite opposite occurred barely 2 weeks prior Uprising began CREDITS go primarily TO Lt Col George Washington Irving
