Keene, New Hampshire (population: 31,721) is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 41,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Keene were the Pilgrims in 1602 and again in 1609. The first permanent settler in what is now Keene was Nicholas Copley who arrived in 1718 from England with his family. In 1769, John Morse moved into the town from Concord and started an agricultural business that still thrives today. In 1801, Samuel Prescott bought land on which Keene stands and built a large home that still stands today as one of the most popular tourist destinations in town. In 1839, James Moulton acquired 4200 acres (1900 ha) of land southeast of Keene and founded Moulton Farms; this became one of the largest ranches east of Rocky Mountains. On July 8th 1870 , Keene's incorporation as a village was made official by then-Governor Jonathan Trumbull with full voting privileges bylaw No 9 . The following year saw another significant milestone when both railroads reached Keene; they opened up traffic to and from Manchester via downtown Keene ! In 1907/08 two new churches were erected on Main Street – First Presbyterian Church and Second Presbyterian Church. They remain among the most popular attractions within Town limits to this day! During World War II much effort went into creating munitions plants nearby for local industry; however due to enemy bombingsKeene experienced some damage but no loss of life !! On October 7th 2014 elections took place for Mayor & Councilors with all candidates receiving over 50% majority vote !! The small-town atmosphere has been preserved through efforts like Chamber Music Society of New Hampshire or Town Meeting Business Committee which ensures that issues facing residents are discussed and resolved through local governance instead of outside bodies like City Council or State Legislature
