The name "Keene" is derived from the Mohawk word Kineen meaning place of plenty or fruitfulness. Keene was founded by English colonists in 1701 as part of an attempt to settle what was then known as Canaan Township on the border of present-day New Hampshire and Vermont. It became a separate town in 1851 and has since grown into one of the largest communities inManchester County. The first settler in Keene was John Eliot who arrived with his family in 1701. He built a cabin near today's Main Street and started trading goods with local Native Americans. By 1800, there were around 100 residents living in Keenetown but it only managed to stay that way for about 10 years because during the French and Indian War (1755-1763), many settlers abandoned their homes in favor of joining up with militia units fighting against British forces. Most English colonists returned home after hostilities ended but some stayed behind to help build Fort Cumberland on nearby Lebanon Hill. By 1809, over 1,000 people lived in Keenetown and it had become an important commercial center due to its location along Route 3A north of Manchesterville and its access to transportation including horse-drawn carriages across the Addison Valley Line into Canada . During this time period there were also several large fires which destroyed most buildings within Keenetown but no one was killed or injured; this made it one of the few towns where fire wasn't an everyday occurrence . In 1851, when Keenesters applied for incorporation as a town they emphasized their focus on agriculture rather than commerce so that their economy could be sustained without outside investment . In addition to being a thriving commercial center during this time period, KeENE also enjoyed notoriety due to its role as host city for both America's first presidential inauguration (Ulysses S Grant) and World Expo America (1958).
