Keene, New Hampshire is a town in Union County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 9,373 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Union County. Keene was first settled by English colonists in 1634 and became a town in 1852. The town's name comes from the Keene River. The first white people to live in what is now Keene were John Billington and his family who arrived on July 10, 1634 as part of an exploration party led by Captain John Smith of Jamestown fame. They founded what is now called Billington Landing on the banks of the Keene River. The area around present-day Keene was mostly uninhabited until European settlement began in earnest about 1720 when General George Washington made his headquarters here during the American Revolution. A post office called "Keenesborough" was established in 1724, but it was discontinued in 1853 because there were no correspondents living thereabouts. In 1851, just before Maine statehood came into effect, Union County was created within New Hampshire and Keenesborough became its county seat; however, this decision did not take into account Maine’s long history as a separate colony and state and so both towns continued to be known as "Keenesborough". In 1906 Keenesborough voters passed a resolution calling for gay rights recognition throughout all of New England; however local authorities refused to recognize this measure because it conflicted with church teaching which considers homosexuality sinful. On November 15th 1961 an earthquake struck eastern NH killing over 100 people while causing extensive damage throughout the region including destruction to much of Keenesborough including many homes that still stand today!
