Keene, New Hampshire is a town in Union County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 4,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Union County and the largest city in Union County by population. The first permanent inhabitants of Keene were two families who arrived from Connecticut on July 8, 1768, when George Washington and his army invaded New England to oust British forces from Concord. At that time there were only about twenty people living in Keene. By 1800, Keene had a population of over 1,000 people and was one of the most prosperous towns in New Hampshire. During the Revolutionary War (1775-83), Keene played an important role as a garrison town on Department Island off present-day Portsmouth Harbour. In 1781 General John Burgoyne's army landed at Portsmouth Harbour after retreating from Saratoga Campaign and encamped near what is now downtown Keene; however, local residents successfully evacuated their homes ahead of Burgoyne's arrival and formed human chains to prevent him from entering their town. After independence was won in 1783, many free men banded together to form a militia to resist British occupation until 1799 when NH became a state. Over time various businesses opened up around downtown including mercantile firms such as Smith & Nephew (founded 1805), Josiah Morse (1828), Asphalt Paving Company (1851), and First National Bank (founded 1892). After several fires destroyed much of downtown during the Great Fire of Manchester in 1835 , millinery store owner Catharine Beale donated land for building a new central square which became known as "Beale Square." The first post office operated in Keene on October 15, 1836 under the name "Manchester". In 1854–55 work began on creating what would become US Route 3 which linked Manchester with Concord via Nashua and Goffstown before becoming NH Route 3A six years later. By 1870 Keeners had rebuilt much of their downtown following devastating fire seasons – Main Street still features wide blocks between buildings with few small streets connecting them – but their biggest accomplishment may have been helping contribute $1 million towards financing construction of Maine's first railroad line which connected Portland with Boston throughNH . The original townsite has since been demolished although some remnant walls can be seen today along Main Street eastward from Center Street where Prescott’s Brewery once stood
