When Webster returned he recommended moving westward from Boston into pioneer territory newly acquired by Congress during the Louisiana Purchase – land that included much of present-day New Hampshire including Keene and Concord (then called Granite City). This recommendation was accepted by President James Kocking and General John Forbes who led troops across Lake Champlain Bridge on July 4, 1802 to claim this land for America which they named "New Hampshire." On July 14 Congress passed an act creating "the Territory of Maine" east of Androscoggin Bay which included most or all present day Keen

The name change came about because during the 1800s, Vermont's eastern border changed from NH to VT so that it would not overlap withNH's western border (the state's original boundaries). In 1864-1865, Keene served as headquarters for Union forces defending Newton Center against Confederate attacks during the American Civil War. On July 4th 1865 Union soldiers under General Philip Sheridan burned down part of downtown to destroy caches of supplies being sent by Nathan Bedford Forrest to help Johnston's south side armies fight against Ulysses S Grant’s Army of Northern Virginia across Massachusetts Bay Bridge (present day Arlington Cemetery). This event is also celebrated each year on Independence Day as a federal holiday in NH On September 25th 1870 US Post Office opened in Keene and remained open until 1978 when it closed due to suburbanization within NH. On October 1st 1880 Keene had its first commercial building which was used by Mrs Alderney for her grocery business until 1922 when she moved into her present building at 5 Main Street which still stands today On January 15th 1893 residents voted 3-2 to incorporate as a city and on February 26th 1893 they did so under the name “Keene” KeENE COMMERCIAL BUILDING ON STATE HIGHWAY 10 West IN THE AREA NOW KNOWN AS KEENE AVE., WAS FIRST BUSINESSES ENTERED INTO IN 1890 BY MRS ALDERNEY FOR HER Grocery BUSINESS BEFORE SHE MOVED INTO HER PRESENT BUILDING AT 5 MAIN STREET THAT STANDS TODAY
