First Mistake: In 1852, John Fenton registered a gun shop in Keene with the name “Fenton” Guns. This was an error as there was no Mr. Fenton involved with this shop at that time. The correct name for the business would be “Fenton Firearms & Tool Works”. 1872: The town of Keene incorporated as a town on July 1st, 1972. At that time, it had only 5 residents and consisted of just a few homes on Main Street. 1902: A shotgun factory opened up in Keene by JT Richards & Sons (later Richards Arms). This factory produced shotguns for both American and British sellers. In 1902, rifle manufacturer Samuel Colt started making revolvers inKeenesville.( later known as Colt Firearms) In 1903, Don Bollinger started manufacturing ammunition for rifles from his store located on State Street(now called Main Street). As ammo production increased within town limits, so did local gun sales rivaling those found outside of town boundaries! In 1912–13 David Bowers manufactured handguns out of his home on Elm street(now called Green Street). Bowers pistols are still being sold today! In 1892, Keene voters passed a ordinance authorizing the manufacture and sale of handguns for self-defense. This led to the establishment of theKeene Pistol Club in 1903, which became NH's first pistol club. In 1919, NH voters passed an ordinance recognizing rifle shooting as a sport eligible for state funding. This led to the creation ofNH Rifle & Shotgun Club Inc., which has been conducting rifle shooting events ever since.
Keene, New Hampshire is a town in Lincoln County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 9,701 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lincoln County. The name "Keene" means "place where willows grow." The Keene area has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three hundred years and there are several museums that document this history including the Keene Museum of American History which is located in downtown Keene. The first white person to live in what is now Keene was John Greenleaf Whittier who settled there in 1802. He built a summer home on what is now Main Street and named it after his home state of Massachusetts which he visited while on vacation. The town began to take form as an agricultural community with extensive farming and cattle farming based around water fowl hunting and trapping during the 1800s. As more people started moving into the area they started developing new businesses such as lumberyards, breweries, blacksmiths, cheese factories and more during the late 19th century when electricity became available in larger towns across America. By 1925 Keene had a population of 10,000 people and by 1930 it had reached 12,000 people with 1 retail store and 3 manufacturing businesses among them During World War II much activity took place within Keene due to its strategic location near transportation links between North America and Europe as well as being one of few major US cities that did not experience significant damage from bombing raids or fires In recent decades much progress has been made within the community with efforts focused on creating a comprehensive arts system; expanding access to affordable housing; improving public education; preserving natural resources; creating jobs through initiatives like job training programs and economic development initiatives

Keene is first settled by English colonists in 1630 as part of an endeavor to settle the large valley between Lakes Winnipesaukee and Merrimack. The town's name comes from John Keene, one of the original settlers. The town was originally known as Vernon until 1836 when it changed its name to Keene after General Nathan Bedford Forrest who had fought with American forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1868, Keene incorporated as a village and changed its name to its current one.In 1915, Keeners erected an Oblong Keg on High Street which still stands today as a reminder of their early days as a village. The largest employer in Keene is the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard which employs over 1,500 people including over 100 sailors and marines stationed here during peacetime and 350 civilians employed by various Navy contractor agencies throughout Hampton Roads Region. Other major employers include P&Gplyne Paper Partners Inc., SMART Technologies Inc., Oneida Development Corporation (a world leader in energy efficiency), Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MMIC) and IBM mainframe computer systems center located here since 1978 which employs more than 1,000 people across 14 states across five continents including two U.S.-based facilities - one near Hartford Connecticut and another just outside of Rochester Hills Michigan
Keene was founded in 1736 by Edward Keene and his wife Sarah. The town was named for Captain John Keene, who had been sent to protect the settlers from the Indians. The first store inKeene opened in 1740. By 1800, there were 9 businesses in the town. In 1821, a post office was established inKeene and remained in operation until 1865. In 1846, the first educational institution in Keene opened as a school for girls. It operated until 1957. In 1857, an ordinance was passed establishing a county courthouse and jail within the town limits. The building now houses the Keeneschool of Business Administration
