Keene is a town in Hampshire County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 5,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea, NH–VT Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Keene was Samuel Higginson in 1768. He built a cabin on the banks of the Keg River and named it "Higginson's Hill." In 1809, Nathan Hale and his brother John were hunting in Keene when they were sighted by David Whitcomb and Andrew Pickering and pursued them to a place near present-day Hooksett where they lost contact with each other. In 1812, the town was established as an act of Congress under the name of "Manchester". The first mayor was Amos Kendall. A post office called Keene was established in 1814, and remained in operation until 1861. After Union troops burned down much of Manchester during their winter campaign against General Sherman's army in 1865, local citizens offered financial help to rebuild the city; this led to Keenes nickname as "The Reconstruction Town." According to one estimate, between 1865 and 1870 about $10 million dollars worth of reconstruction projects were undertaken in Keene alone. In 1870, there were only 2 white males living among 793 black Americans who lived in town; by 1880 that number had increased to 10% of all residents. However, both racial tensions and economic challenges have been key drivers throughout KEENE'S history - for example: through its participation (along with neighboring towns) within Hudson's Bay Company's North America Railroad which transported goods from Canada into New England during the mid 1800s; or its efforts during World War II to become one of 20 US military plants located outside Manhattan Beach CA due to lack of available land elsewhere within NH & VT Yankee defense industry buildup after Pearl Harbor notable KEENE unemployment rates highest ever recorded
