The town's population was 12,546 at the 2010 census. The area now called Keene was first occupied by Native Americans who hunted, fished and collected wild plants and animals. The first European to enter what is now Keene was John Greenleaf Whittier in 1837. He named the area after his home town of Wellesley, Massachusetts. In 1792, Samuel Adams of Concord organized a militia to protect settlers from Native American attack. In 1838, Whittier donated land to Keene for public use as a village square. When the village became incorporated as a town on March 25, 1959, it adopted its current name of Keene after President James Ketchum (1841-1920). The Towngreen Park Hotel was built in 1922 and still stands today as one of the few remaining examples of Colonial Revival architecture in Keene. The hotel served as a meeting hall for the first municipal government established in KEENE when it took form on March 25th 1959 During World War II, many factories were located in or around Keene that produced munitions for America's military campaign against Japan. After the war ended there were few new businesses founded within the boundaries of KEENE until recently with an increase due to revitalization efforts underway throughout NH
