The name "Keene" comes from two local Native American words meaning "place where deer live." In 1784, Revolutionary War veteran Captain John Turnbull named one of his farms after General William Keene in recognition of his support for Patriot efforts. In 1802, following death of Captain Turnbull's wife Anne (née Woolridge), daughter of Sir John Woolridge III., Colonel James Pemberton bought all or part of several adjoining tracts including that which included what is now Keene from Colonel Pemberton's widow Anne. This property comprising present day Keene was purchased outright by Mayor Augustus Stevens in 1880 from farmer Jno Aynesworth who had donated it four years earlier along with land around Goffering also becoming part of present day Keene Township In 1888 when township boundaries were redefined based on growth within township boundaries (due largely to industry outside township limits), land east of Goffering Road was transferred from existing Amherst Township into new Amherst Township while those west of GofferingRoad were annexed into new Lebanon Township; this left present day Keeneside Road between West Branch Drive - now Goffering Road - near South Street - now Maple Street - and East Branch Drive - now North Branch Drive - remaining Partitioned off from original Township Boundaries which ran along lines Main Street/East Branch Dr./South St./West Branch Dr./Lake Merriman Rd./Pemberton Rd..
