Keene is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 11,731 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Granite County. The name "Keene" derives from the Shawnee word "kanneh", meaning "a small stream". The first Europeans to visit Keene were French traders and missionaries in 1702. The town site was surveyed in 1735 by Lieutenant Colonel John Byron, part of British forces invading America during the Seven Years' War. On July 8, 1740, General George Washingtonpostulated on a map of North America that included Keene as its future site; it was accepted and incorporated as a town on February 16, 1741. At first, most residents worked for local farmers or used their homes as barns and outbuildings for grist-mills and other agricultural purposes; however, with an increasing amount of industry coming to town (including saw mills), more people began to move into Keene and eventually fill the downtown area which became known as "The Harvesters' Village." In 1812–1813 Nicholas Flournoy commanded American forces that invaded Canada during the Peninsular War under General Andrew Jackson. He decided that Keene would be his headquarters while he campaigned through New England against British troops north of Lake Champlain. As part of this campaign he built Fort Knox which later became an important military base in eastern New England during the American Civil War due to its strategic location between Boston and Albany on Lake Georgeand its position overlooking major army encampments along I-90 north of Rochester

In 1832, when it became part of Virginia County, Keene had a population of 1,069 people. A mill built here by Nathan Smith became one of the largest employers in Keenes early history; its products included flour for breadmaking and other purposes as well as cottonseed oil for manufacturing cannons and other munitions. With increased production came increased demand for water; during the 1830s Certa Water Company began to bring water toKeene from Lake Winnipesaukee through canals dug beneath the nearby hillsides. By 1840 Keene's population had grown to 2,021 people; however growth stopped after 1845 because of low levels of crop yields due to bad weather conditions caused by typhoons passing through China Lake every year then known to be brewing there: these storms destroyed infrastructure and homes left unoccupied until they were rebuilt or replaced (the certificates issued by county officials list this fact). The last decade saw some resurgence with construction on new housing developments throughout town beginning around 1990 which has resulted in an overall increase since 2000 over 5% from 681 residents at 2010 Census
