Dover is a town in New Hampshire, United States. It was chartered on May 25, 1792 as the townsite of Dover Beach after the first land sale in the town. The name Dover is derived from Old English dóorf, meaning "bridge over" or "tunnel", and was chosen because it crossed the river Piscataqua. The first white settlers arrived in Dover in 1794 and began to take up land around what is now downtown. By 1800, there were about 20 families living in Dover. A courthouse and jail were built soon after and they served as legal witnesses until 1803 when a new courthouse was erected closer to the town center. In 1815, Dartmouth College moved from Northampton to nearby Hanover County and it became necessary for students to travel into Portsmouth by horseback or carriage due to lack of roads. So Dartmouth sent its coachman across the river with letters announcing their arrival until 1830 when Dover had a wagon road that led directly into Portsmouth! Dover's post office opened on December 12, 1814, which continued serving until 1975 when it was merged into Manchester Post Office #1. The first school in Dover was called School House No. 2 but it failed to attract enough pupils so an addition was built next door (now part of City Hall) for $5 peryear in 1795 which became known as Baldwin's Academy after Rev. John Baldwin who donated the land for it The first teacher at this school was Obadiah Greenough who taught 1st grade until he resigned his position effective November 4th, 1800 because he could not find teachers willing to come out West during those difficult times In 1802-1803 two builders named Warrington came through town looking for property they wantedally bought but they never did any construction; instead they simply advertised their services When war broke out between America & Great Britain during the Napoleonic Wars (1799-1815), many people left rural areas for safer havens like Dover because life wasn't safe back home Many soldiers who served here ended up coming back home once peace returned so there are some interesting stories surrounding these builders . One such story goes like this; one day while working on his house Warrington heard someone knocking at his front door so he went outside just in time see 3 British officers walking down Main Street towards him asking if he knew anything about warring countries? Although Auburn has since annexed most of what remains of Dover Beach including much of its historical core (the original village), Downtown is still largely unincorporated with only limited development taking place near its namesake creekfront spot There have been several major redevelopment projects throughout recent years including a planned revitalization effort dubbed 'New Enterprise District', now known as Main Streets Plaza'; however although plans are currently underway for mixed use development along busy streetscape corridors Downtown remains largely undeveloped despite growing population growth Overhead parking meters have started ringing louder & earlier than ever before (& we've got more cars!) finally raising awareness about proper street design leading inevitably moreordevelopment w/out sprawl
