Dover, New Hampshire is a town in Dover County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 4,717 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Dover County and the second-largest municipality in New Hampshire after Manchester. The first settler of Dover was Captain John Smith who landed there on July 24th 1608 with his expedition to find a route to Manila Bay. The first store in Dover opened on December 7th 1820 located on what is now Main Street. In 1830, two brothers named Sibley built a log cabin near present day Depot Square that still stands as one of the most distinctive buildings within the town limits today. In 1856, Joshua Fry established a millinery business in Dover which continued until 1916 when it closed due to competition from other mills throughout the state of New Hampshire. The only other non-governmental institution which has operated continuously within the boundaries of Dover for over 100 years is Veterans Memorial Hall which opened its doors on November 5th 1902 and currently serves as an open-air museum dedicated to military history and culture. Today, many businesses remain open within downtown Dover thanks to its strong economic base helped by its proximity to Interstate 95 and US Route 1A motorways as well as its location within easy driving distance of major metropolitan areas such as Boston,Philadelphia andNew York City

Dover is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 4,811 at the 2010 census. Dover is the county seat of Dover County and one of the five townships in the county. It is part of the Manchester, NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Dover came overland from Canada in 1609 when Samuel Pepys journeyed through that area on his way from Boston to London. They named their new settlement after Prince Maurice, Duke of Orléans who had just come down from France with an army to take possession of Acadia (present-day Nova Scotia). On July 14, 1629, English explorer John Smith set out from Plymouth Colony on his historicvoyage which became known as "the great adventure" because he failed to find any hostile natives along the way. When Smith arrived at Portsmouth Plantation on September 3, 1629/30 he discovered that it was occupied by French people and abandoned his exploration plans for New England. The English name for this area was Saco Township until 1768 when it changed to Dover Township because King George II granted land east of Portsmouth Plantation to a group of farmers led by Nicholas Trumbull for use as farming land during Crown's War (1754-1763). In 1814, following America's admission into the Union as a national country, Dover became part of Massachusetts Bay Colony and remained so until 1959 when New Hampshire seceded from Massachusetts and formed its own independent nation called New Hampshire. When Independence was attained in 1776 both Maine and Vermont were claimed by America but no action was taken because there were no native Americans living in those areas at that time. On February 20th 1777 Congress passed an act granting independence to all British colonies west of Philadelphia including Delaware and Rhode Island which included what is now eastern Dover County. On March 12th 1777 Delaware ratified this independence act becoming sole US state without having received additional territory from America like Maine or Vermont which means that only New Hampshire got her own unique form of government - THE STATE OF NEW HAMPTON! With this accomplished we can finally put our collective feet up and move on forever! On November 15th 1800 while serving as Governor General under President John Adams – one day after Boston successfully fought off another royalist attempt at Invasion - Thomas Paine delivered a speech before Congress denouncing Royal rule throughout North America saying: "'deep within these Colonies you will see examples enough already given them by Great Britain; whereby she carves herself a monuments not less than four score years old". This speech played a large role in rallying support among patriots across North America against British tyranny which eventually led to Patriots taking control during the Revolutionary War starting with Lexington & Concord where over 100 men died leading Patriots such as Benedict ArnoldUSN who said "I cannot help thinking they did well." Aftermath saw more than 2 million Soldiers enlisting making American Revolution something much bigger than just local skirmishes etc...
