In the 1800s, Dover was a thriving town with an active gun trade. The rise of the American Revolution and the War for Independence led to a surge in firearm production, and by 1821, Dover had become one of the leading firearms manufacturing centers in America. In response to this boom, manufacturers erected large factories on Market Street and State Street. Factory workers produced tools, paperweights, pistols and other firearms. However, during the 19th century many businesses closed down or moved away from Dover due to successive economic downturns. Gunsmiths also became saturated with demand from eastern United States shooters while arsenals continued to produce rifles and shotguns at high levels without competition. By 1925 only two gunsmiths remained in Dover - David Lovett & Sons and Hodge & Smith - both of which were struggling financially. Despite these challenges, David Lovett & Sons managed to keep afloat until it ceased operations in 1970 after over 125 years in business. Today only one surviving member of the original family still resides in Dover - grandson John Lovett Jr., who passed away last year at 95 years old. Dover's gun industry may have ended but its history does not end there! The town has been known for its namesake product: soft drinks! As part of its centennial celebration in 1984-85 Soft Drinks Company organized a series of events throughout town including street fairs, concerts and easy going get-togethers for all ages at local parks like Pennington Parkallee (now Demarest Park). The Dover, New Hampshire Gun Case Company was established in 1892 bySAMUEL SMITH and JAMES WOOD. The company started out making caseguns for the local farmers and hunters. In 1916 they became the first retailer of firearms in Dover when they opened their own store. The store continued to grow until it closed in 1961. Today there is only a single surviving piece of Smith & Wesson memorabilia from this era remaining - a gun holster made from an old belt that belonged to Samuel Smith.

In 1865, Colt began production of their revolvers using a patented design called the ‘Claymore System’. This system allowed for easy attachment and removal of cartridges without having to remove the entire revolver entirely. The popularity of these revolvers led to Soft Gun Cases being developed specifically for these firearms. Over time, other firearms such as shotguns and rifles were also made into soft case models, making this an industry wide trend. Today, there are many different types of soft cases available on the market that cater to every need a shooter might have while owning or using a firearm.
