Dover, New Hampshire is a town in Cumberland County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. Dover is located on the Merrimack River. The town was named for General John Forbes (1736- 1802), who fought in the American Revolution and then served as commander of British forces in North America. In 1794, Forbes founded the town of Dover on then-current land near wherepresent-day Dover stands. The first post office opened in Dover on October 1, 1794. In 1801, the name of the town changed to Plymouth because it had been recommended by General Andrew Johnson after he visited Plymouth Rock during his presidential campaign. Dover grew rapidly due to its location and commerce became dominant in this early community; textiles were a major industry until about 1860 when lumber began to become more important as a result of wood available nearer Boston. By 1880, there were twelve stores and two hotels in Dover with over $10 million worth of trade annually exported through its doors. Businesses stopped growing around World War II as many people moved away or left agriculture for urban jobs which impacted their local economy negatively; however, since 2000 growth has resumed with new businesses opening up such as technology startups and health food stores However some residents are concerned that while business activity has uptick since 2000's lows there have not been corresponding decreases in crime rates or property values due to an increasein population density; nonetheless overall development seems positive despite these concerns
