Red dot sight history in Dover began with a red dot sighting by George Washington on July 4, 1776 during his drive from Portsmouth to Boston. The first permanent red dot sights were developed in the early 1900s as an adaptation of Zeiss Tikkunirs and other reflex sights for use with rifles and shotguns. In 1919, Red Dot Sight Co., Ltd., was founded in Dover by Adolphus Ives and William Hickey to produce these new reflex sights. This company continued production until it merged into S&W Ballistics Incorporated in 1985. In 1966, Winchester Repeating Arms Company commenced production of its Model 70 rifle using the then new 6x24mm aperture rear sight adapted from that used on their Model 94 lever-action rifles which had been introduced two years earlier. This barrel-saving reworking of the older 6x28mm objective design also resulted in increased accuracy with this type of rifle over previous Models while still providing enough power to obtain good results at long range The ballistics innovation that helped make Winchester's Model 70 one of the most successful bolt action rifles ever created was their folding bipod feature which allowed users to collapsed or extend the bipod either while shooting or recoil shielding it from inadvertent contact with ground objects when not being used (henceforth known as "the Winchester way"). The self-contained rifle magazine featured a pair of magazines each containing fifteen rounds fired through an external feeding system and fed via stripper clips onto either side of the receiver handguard - making reloading quick and easy even under heavy fire; something that had never been possible before with any other model family firearm! This pioneering design change would continue throughout much of World War II as tactical requirements changed so rapidly on both sides that it became impossible for combatants to keep up with changing technology; leaving battlefield commanders struggling unsuccessfully to adapt against overwhelming odds!
