Dover, New Hampshire is a town in King and Queen County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 9,895 at the 2010 census. Dover was founded in 1764 by English settlers who named it for the Doves that nested on the rise overlooking their settlement. Dover became an incorporated village in 1853 and a town in 1907. It is part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Dover were French traders sailing up the Housatonic River from Québec City on October 10, 1614. They noted two small villages on either side of the river called "Port Royal" and "Dover", but they did not explore them further because there was no suitable landing site for their ships within reach of present day Portsmouth, NH. On July 15, 1764, Lieutenant Colonel John Starkt erected a watchtower over his own house at present day Portsmouth Square to warn residents of Indian attacks along the coast northwest of Boston. He named his Watchtower Tower after General George Washington's Headquarters during the American Revolution which he had visited several years earlier while serving as commander of troops in Canada (the only time Washington ever made a cross country trip). Dover, New Hampshire is a town in western New Hampshire and the county seat of Dover County. The population was 26,493 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Manchester–Boston Metropolitan Area. In 1820, Dover was chosen as the site for a new courthouse in what is now Manchester and it served as such until 1830 when a new courthouse was built in Portsmouth. The first post office in Dover opened on December 10, 1824. The town's name originates from "Dovercourt" which means "place where two roads meet." A year later, on February 14, 1830, Dover became an incorporated village under the name of Portsmouth. From 1837 to 1865, it also served as the territorial capital of New Hampshire before Boston took that role. The town has had several notable residents including General George Washington who lived here during his time as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army; author Prentice Hall Publishing Company founder Cyrus Heth; Joanne Lumley Morris who wrote many books about her ancestors born here; and current Mayor Donne Bagshaw who came to Dover after serving as mayor of Nashua for three terms starting in 2004. Dover was stricken by fire on July 5th 2009 while still under rebuild following Hurricane Irene which caused $10 million in damage and left over 100 businesses closed or damaged.
