In 1837 Dover became part of Massachusetts as a result of the Organic Act which granted voting rights to towns within seceding states. The population reached 2,500 by 1850 but declined rapidly due to immigration fromNew Englandand other parts of America during the 1830s and 1840s. Immigration resumed during World War II when many families came for work in munitions plants near Boston; however, this increased Reverse migration from Plymouth Colony started soon afterwards so that by 1960 there were only 7 residents remaining from 1800 while over 100 descendants still live here today! Dover has had three mayors: George Ladd (1893-1906), James Broughton (1913-1945) and Ernest Jethro Mathieson (1948-1960). Dover, New Hampshire is a town in Rockingham County, NH, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. Dover is part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea, NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has been laid out on a series of hills and valleys since its founding in 1768. The first permanent settler in Dover was John Heard who arrived there with his family in 1768 aboard the ship "Plymouth" from London. He built himself a small cabin on an hill overlooking Dover Harbor and organized some local farmers to start growing corn and other crops. When the Revolutionary War began, Heard took up arms as a patriot and helped lead an uprising against British rule. After the war he returned to live with his family until 1800 when he sold land to Seth Hunt who established what would become Dover Township. Dover's history can be traced back to when it was part ofNH's Anabaptist Congregational Church parish located along present day Route 2A outside of Manchester which started worshiping there around 1636 CE (in English). Reverend John White led the congregation from Hanover Square near Concord where they met for services every morning before traveling across Delaware River for worship at Windsor Castle each afternoon On September 15th 1638 Reverend White erected Meeting House here first reported by Edmund Andros in his diary while en route home from meeting at Windsor In 1642 Samuel Eliot set out with three others - John Eliot ( brother of Drury), George Howland & Abraham Head - to found Derby Lightness Company trading salt prodigiously over Indiamen between Plymouth and Boston then downintestinal rivers into Connecticut A year later they encountered difficulties getting patent for their enterprise but finally got one on October 8th 1643 having passed through various stops along their journey including Portsmouth/New Bedford/weighing anchor off Long Island . They reached Plymouth about sunset that night after covering 350 miles nonstop Another five years went by before they obtained another patent January 25th 1648 which enabled them to open stores at Dartmouth bassinet or Chicopee harbor selling goods direct to consumers without going through any intermediate merchants This new business venture failed within two years however due largely to competition from those same Indies companies shipping goods directly now under seal rather than being opened up for inspection It wasn't until April 7th 1654 when Amos Kendall founded Kendall’s Wharf along present day Main Street which became known as “The Wharf” approximately one hundred yards east of where Mr. Kendall lived later that year In addition several other traders soon followed suit such as Increase Mather November 10th following passage ot New England whale fishery monopoly granted by King Charles II This event initiated what would become known as “Mather’s Era” during which time many prominent men such as Increase Mather came to live and die here including Cotton Mather who resided here until his death in 1802 The post office called “Doverport” was established March 25th 1792 bears witness thereto The original name for this place may have been derived from its location just inside the western limits of NH designated by surveyor James Norris alias Pemaquid about four miles above current site given prevailing winds driving snowdrifts high enough so houses could not be seen or counted From this point forward any changes occurring herein were due primarily either geographical or topographical factors resulting principally from increasing population density resultant from transportation improvements made during period
