Dover was founded in 1768 by Nicholas Dover and his brother John as an experimental settlement on the south bank of the Merrimack River. The first courthouse was built in 1807 but burned down in 1814; the second courthouse was completed in 1826 and served until it burned down again in 1908. The town originally consisted of just a few hundred acres (0.8 km2). In 1870, Dover became one of two towns chosen to become the seat of Kent County after it was created from parts of Holland Patent Township and Windham Township. After being selected as the county seat, Dover experienced a growth spurt with new businesses established such as a grocery store and cigar factory. However, during World War II significant destruction took place along theMerrimack River valley due to bombing raids by American forces which resulted in many buildings including many churches being lost or destroyed. The town has since undergone some redevelopment including an expansion into residential areas along Route 3 that began in the early 2000s

Dover, New Hampshire is a town located in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. The population was 12,859 at the 2010 census. Dover was founded by English colonists in 1764 as a trading post on the Portsmouth River. The town grew rapidly and by 1836 had a population of 23,000. Dover became an incorporated borough in 1892 and then an unincorporated township in 1902. It became a city on January 1, 1959. As of the 2010 census, Dover had a total population of 26,644 people. Dover's history can be traced back to the early days of American settlement in Hillsborough County. In 1764 two English colonists named John Mason and Roger Sherman founded Portsmouth Landing on the Portsmouth River after fleeing from British forces during the Boston Tea Party. The landing soon became known as Dover because of its location downstream from where Plymouth Plantation stood for many years before it was destroyed by fire in 1623. In 1768 John Stevens arrived with his family to establish Portsmouth Village along the riverbank west of present-day Route 3A near today's Interstate 95 exit 5B. Stevens had come overland from Rhode Island and landed at what is now Mount Hope Lake while journeying eastward through Hillsborough County on his way to purchase land Lots 7 and 8 along what is now Route 3A north of present-day Route 3A/US 3 (later I-95). By 1800 Dover had become one of America's leading commerce centers due to its location upstream from major rivers and easy access to transportation routes including both boats and steamboats upriver from Portsmouth Landing via SR 4 (now US 3) and NH 22 (then NH 24). In 1801 Great Britain attacked American ports along its coast resulting in extensive damage which led to development at Portsmouth Village as well as elsewhere along America's Eastern seaboard around this time including Williamsburg, Virginia; Newport News Shipbuilding Company yards at Hampton Roads; Philadelphia; Baltimore; Savannah; Charleston Harbor; Wilmington Castle
