Dover, New Hampshire is a town in Franklin County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 5,197 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous town in Franklin County and has been so since the mid 1800s. Dover was first settled by English colonists in 1624 as "Haverhill" after the nearby Haverhill Plantation. Dover's name comes from Old English "Dover", meaning a small island in the River Deben. In 1777, during The American Revolution, General George Washington camped near Dover on orders of General John Burgoyne to intimidate British forces besieging Albany. In 1875, Dover became part of America when it ratified the Constitution of United States. As one of its earliest Municipalities, it charterized itself as an incorporated city on February 14th of that year with a population of 668 residents. On May 12th 1904, Dover attained statehood as a separate state within the Union under legislation approved by both houses of Congress; however this referendum did not take place until 1916 due to lack of voter turnout (the town had been organized as an incorporated city). The current form of government for Dover began operations on July 1st 1978 when Mayor Bob Doherty became first female mayor in New Hampshire history and also became one-time chairman and CEO for Portsmouth-based WGBH Media Company which operates two PBS stations inNH – member station WCNU (NBC) and member station WHDH (CBS) On November 10th 2013 President Barack Obama declared October 3rd National Historical Marker Day in commemoration of all American Patriots who fought patriots throughout history including those from Dover The City Manager’s Office provides leadership & direction through strategic planning/programming while providing services such as street cleaning/maintenance; event coordination; budgeting/spending control; human resources management including hiring/firing procedures; marketing initiatives; public information policy
Dover was founded in 1777 by the Reverend John Hitchcock and his wife, Deborah. The town grew rapidly and by 1819 it had a population of 682. Dover was incorporated as a city in 1846, and became the capital of New Hampshire when that state was formed from parts of Vermont and Maine. The city built a large new downtown area which is stillexistent today. In 1963 the city annexed the neighboring town of Milford, creating a combined population of over 11,000 people.
