Dover is located on the southern edge of the Blackstone Valley and has an exposed bedrock surface. It is one of the most scenic towns in New Hampshire. Dover was first settled by English colonists in 1703 and became a part of Massachusetts in 1781. The town's name comes from Dover Castle which stood near the present-day intersection of Routes 3 and 128. In 1802, Dover became a town charter with a population of 2,500 people. The growth of Dover was due to its location on Route 3 between Boston and Manchester as well as its close proximity to other settlements in Union County such as Nashua and Concord. In 1830, when New Hampshire passed its Unlawful Seizure Act which limited Native American title to land within two miles of any white settlement, Dover became one of many NH towns to secede fromNH statehood until it was reinstated by the legislature in 1873 under Governor John Atherton. After being part of NH for over 100 years, Dover made history as the first municipality to commemorate World War I " Memorial Day" on April 6th by hosting an annual parade through downtown followed by a service at First Congregational Church which honored military veterans who had died during that conflict In recent years there have been efforts to revive downtown Dartmouth and make it more pedestrian friendly including renovations to streetscapes such as King Street between Dartmouth College and Elmira Place; construction of new sidewalks on Main Street between Dartmouth College and Union Chapel; installation of art installations along King Street; addition of streetlights around Borough Hall Square; expansion into new buildings adjacent to First Congregational Church (now known as Clarendon Center); renovation/update/remodeling/construction inside Town Hall Annexe including updated fireplaces/stoves; installation/maintenance throughout Pollyanna Park featuring sculptures by local artists The foundation stone for what would become Delaware Avenue was laid October 15th 1898 when developer Wm Fenton donated $2 million dollars towards what would become one blocklong roadway bisecting Quaker Hill Road across from South End Market eastward thence entering Indian Head Road) This road later became known as "Dover Boulevard". On December 1st 1902 during his inauguration as Mayor Thomas Hickey placed cornerstone for Second Presbyterian Church west side entrance Drive now named Delaware Avenue . Thursday nights were once again becoming popular events where citizens gathered around hackney horses pulled carts fullers called ' democracy ' down main avenue (now simply called "Avenue") where they discussed politics or news with roadside vendors

Dover was founded by Pilgrims in 1764 as a trading post on the southern end of what is now called Plymouth Rock. Dover later became a small community and part of the larger Portsmouth area until it was annexed by Portsmouth in 1801. In 1814, Dover incorporation as a town occurred after much lobbying from residents of Portsmouth and other nearby towns who wanted to remain separate. The town quickly became an important center for trade and commerce with its location on the appalachian Mountains between Maine and Vermont providing ample watered land for dairy farming. By 1893, Dover had become one of America's largest cotton markets with textile mills accounting for most of the town's economic growth up until World War II when manufacturing activity began to decline. The birth of automobiles made Dover an important center for car manufacturing beginning in 1909 with the establishment of Ford Motor Company there followed by Chevrolet, Chrysler and other manufacturers over the next few decades until production ceased in 1970 due to declining demand for vehicles relative to changes occurring in society. Today, only two buildings remain from early automotive manufacturing - One is used as a museum and the other houses parts for vintage cars which are currently displayed at this location during special events such as tractor pulls or antique car shows
