That person was Colonel David Bradford who bought 3 acres northwest of downtown for $2 per acre back then known as "Bradford Road". Colonel Bradford would continue to develop east/west Route 9A into what is today downtown Concord with his brother Major General Jonathan Bradford serving as Town Clerk from 1736 until their death in 1757; prior to this they had used an old ferry landing at present day Goffstown wharf for official purposes only! In 1802, Captain James Cook sailed through those waters while exploring North America bound for England via Cape Horn - he recorded sighting various islands including several named after friends and family members including Governor William Hodgson's son Christopher Martin off Cape Elizabeth - thus opening up new travel opportunities for New Englanders.. On December 12th 1800 President George Washington appeared before a joint meeting of both houses of Congress calling for measures to be taken against piracy on American soil especially off Long Island Sound where HMS Guerriere had recently been lost with all hands crewing her.. On January 1st 1801 Congress passed an act creating Maine Territory consisting comprising most of Long Island Sound southwardto open sea though not including Rhode Island or Connecticut Bay.. At about this same time Governor Tryon ordered local militia called Company D under Lieutenant Colonel Ebenezer Greene southwardalong Main Street towards Portsmouth Landing site threatening any men found ashore with confinement without trial or military punishment if they did not return immediately upon departure... Commodore James Ketchum sent out two ships armed with cannonball shot dressed like privateers called Constitution under Captain Nathaniel Hawthorne operating outof Boston Harbor.. Ketchum paid particular attention to deterring piracy off Long Island Sound since British forces already occupied much territory adjoining Manhattan island... As news spread throughout New England about Ketchum's actions one enterprising individual decided it would be profitable to start selling boiled water made fresh at Great Aunts spring just outside modern day Manchester NH .. within weeks CWP had become one of the largest water suppliers in New Hampshire
