Pownall's mill used water power to grind corn and flour for local merchants and farmers. In 1813, Pownall sold his interest in the mill to Ezra Stroud who operated it as a storehouse until 1840 when it became known as "Stroud's Mill." In 1862, John Haverhill founded Haverhill College here with some donated land and started classes on October 1st of that year. By 1870, Concord had a population of over 10 thousand people and an enrollment of more than 200 students including 30% women! The post office (established December 4th, 1768) served Concord until 1830; however mail service continued until 1938 when it was moved to Nashua! In 1878–79 Hiram Maxim built a sawmill on the river near present day Derby Street in downtown Concord The mills produced high quality lumber which was shipped all over eastern North America Eventually they closed down due to competition from cheaper imported lumber However there are still remnants of them today around Derby Street
