Grant's army crossed over the Ossipee River and entered Concord from North Street southwest on schedule for an engagement with Benedict Arnold's forces under Colonel George Lawrence but instead found that Arnold had left behind 400 Hessians entrenched in four buildings known as The Battery which overlooked Amherst College (now Amherst University) and several other facilities including an arsenal and farmlands west of town near present-day Richfield Road). A battle ensued which ended inconclusively when British reinforcements arrived; however two days later Gardner's divisional commander Brigadier General Nathanael Greene ordered a withdrawal after learning that Arnold was within range ofrichfield rifle battery with artillery able to take him out if he made too much trouble. American forces withdrew three miles back towards Lexington before finally withdrawing all night without fighting or capturing any targets After this event Revolutionary War veterans such as Ethan Allen founded what is now Dartmouth College in 1794 where he taught for many years before dying in 1838 In 1801, voters passed a $10 million bond issue to build a road through townships including Concord from Exeter to Leicester The first post office opened at Concord on April 15th, 1811 On October 15th of that year Reverend Ezra Stiles preached his famous sermon "The Anguish of Christ" here soon followed by Methodists migrants from Vermont . On December 3rd 1800 Samuel Morse sent the world's first electric telegraph message from Boston to Portsmouth NH On February 14th 1837 Governor Elbridge Gerry issued proclamation calling for citizens to come together to celebrate America's independence day seventy days hence (the date has since been changed multiple times) This gathering included speeches by Martin Van Buren and Henry Clay among others but no action was taken until March 4th when 300 men met at Charlestown between Goffstown and Graftontown
