Concord, New Hampshire is a small town in western New Hampshire and is the county seat of Hampshire County. The population of Concord was 397 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Manchester-New Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Concord was made by Captain John Smith on July 10, 1609 as part of the Agreement between England and Native Americans which ended the Pequot War. On October 17, 1777, during the Battle of Saratoga, British General David Hunter's force destroyed a munitions train discovered near present-day Goffstown. This event helped convince George Washington to give up his plan to march on Philadelphia and instead pursue an eastern route through New York City. In 1838, federal troops burned down a schoolhouse in nearby Dover while retreating from another engagement with Indians. Concord was platted as a town by Ezra Stiles on December 2nd, 1839. The first post office opened in Concord on January 1st, 1840. Reverend Nathaniel Ames served as the town's first Postmaster until he resigned due to illness on April 5th., 1840 after which Reuben Farnsworth took over until March 3rd., 1841 when Amos Eaton became Postmaster again because Reverend Ames had died two days earlier.. The downtown core of Concord features several large businesses including NH State Bank (opened 1912), Wellesley Foods (founded 1926), Merrimack Valley Paper Company (founded 1902), United States Postal Service Headquarters Annexes #2 & 3 (opened 1978) and many other smaller businesses. There are also numerous churches and museums scattered throughout downtown including: First Congregational Church (opened 1938), Saint Anselm Catholic Church (1902), Emmanuel Episcopal Church (1899), Nashoba Baptist church(1892) and First Congregationalist Synagogue (built 1889). Many residents also enjoy various outdoor activities such as skiing at Snowmass Ski Resort or fishing at Hancock Lake/Hancock Pond outside of town limits; however most people who call Concord home are involved in local businesses or politics within their community
The town of Concord, New Hampshire was founded in 1794 by the merger of two other settlements, Concord and Hooksett. The first settler in Concord was George Washington. In 1814, the town voted to become a state within the United States.
