At this time there were only two villages in Essex County:Manchester and Loudonville. It is likely that Woolrich named his new community after his old home town of Manchester because he felt that it would provide more support for him as he developed it as a business venture than either Loudonville or Londonderry would do alone. Woolrich's first store opened on Main Street near what is now the corner of Meetinghouse Road and Market Street on November 12, 1621; trade began immediately with goods brought overland from Portsmouth through Canterbury and Exeter along Route 3A (present-day Interstate 95). He continued to grow his business over time and soon boasted six stores throughout New England selling both hardware and groceries as well as lumber, stonehenge tools, candles, tea chests (and other items), saddles and bridles, whips/stocks/spurs etc., shoeshine etc., wagonloads of potatoes arrived daily during harvest season! By 1700 he had laid out five streets within walking distance of his store - evidence that commerce flourished during those early days when transportation via land only crossed rivers at considerable distances! Concurrently with woolrich’s success story we see another milestone in Concord’s growth – its incorporation into Durham Township on January 1st 1768 under act #2255 A[d] 2 Geo[r] V [16] . This occasion signals an important change not just for Concord but also for neighboring Sunderland where likewise Durham Township had been created only one week earlier! This shows how quickly communities could form & grow when desired!! With such rapid development came increased demand for space so much so that by 1800 “the Streets were too narrow even for wagons drawn by four horses” making delivery all but impossible !! But this didn't stop people from continuing to shoplift etc until they finally solved their problem(s)!! On September 15th 1812 while General George Washington lay dying at Mount Vernon he dictated a letter reading “To His Majestic Most Excellent Majesty I have these words written——Dear Sir I am writing upon my own responsibility——I request you will take no notice Of any Rumors current among your subjects about me being alive or dead——I shall judge myself by what I write—-When I am gone you may please forward this letter to Mr Howe who will carry it On behalf Of Your most excellent Majesty’s serviceable subjects Jno Adams
