When Concord, New Hampshire started to become a town in 1825, it was the first town in New Hampshire to pass an ordinance providing for the regulation of firearms. In 1827, a gun powder magazine and store were built in Concord. The store continued to be operated by George Putnam until 1861 when he sold his interest in the business to A.W. Farnsworth. After Farnsworth’s death in 1865, ownership passed through several hands before being bought by John Waddell who kept it running until 1947 when it closed its doors for good. The Concord Gunpowder Magazine is one of the oldest and most well-known gun stores in New Hampshire and has been open since 1798. It was located on High Street between Old Market Road and Amherst Road across from what is now Dartmouth College. The building still stands today and is used as a museum today. The Concord Gun Powder Magazine also played an important role in the early history of gun control in New Hampshire. In 1845, they came up with the idea of licensing all firearm owners so that they could be sure that they weren’t being used unlawfully against innocent people or during peaceable protests. When English colonists began settling in what is now NH in 1704 they founded a small town called Ipswich on Long Island near Plymouth (now part of Manchester). The name for Concord was chosen because it was then doubted if there could be any city or town within 1000 miles of Boston where all merchants would gather for trade purposes. The first courthouse in Concord was built about 1709-10 by Reverend Davenport (later Bishop) and James Bowyer (a Loyalist officer who had fled to NH during King George's War). In 1803-4 Amesbury Township became part of Concord after being split off from Arlington Township. The township's first meeting took place on February 15th, 1803 under charter from Governor Amos Chandler. At that meeting Colonel John Chilton obtained a land grant from Governor Samuel Howe for $100 per acre which included most of what is now downtown Concord. As more settlers arrived they needed housing so two lots were sold for $60 each – one lot still stands today between High Street and Market Street near present day Union Square Shopping Center! On October 6th 1820 another charter was obtained from Governor Andrew Jackson granting 164 acres southeast of present day Park Avenue including much modern downtown Concord Including much of current day Bank Street! This gave rise to speculation that this may be where President Washington’s mansion once stood but no confirmation ever surfaced! When America became a republic in 1776 many men left England to fight for independence including Jonathan Edwards who settled at Lexington Ferry just outside modern day Burlington along with his wife Lucy Prentice Edwards Miner who later served as United States Senator from MA & wife Sarah Pierce Poletti also member US Congress representing MA until her death In 1800 she married Drury Morse also serving as U S Ambassador to Great Britain during their marriage During American Revolution many patriots such as Mercy Otis Warren fought alongside British troops seeking freedom from their oppressors however when war ended she returned home rather than serve against her own country she moved back intoNH with her husband finally becoming naturalized U S Citizen around this time In 1788 Reverend Timothy Dwight founded “Dwight Academy” located next door to where Weymouth Meeting House now stands which operated until 1800 when it merged into Harvard University .
