As a result of this victory over France, European settlers began pouring into North America; many seeking opportunities for wealth beyond what had been available before. One such group was a group led by Drury Lewis who established themselves at what would become Claremont about two miles northeast of modern day Clarendon Avenue on October 14th, 1769. The townspeople voted to rename their town after General Wolfe – presumably because he represented everything that made them proud as Americans: courage under fire, selflessness throughout war effort, etcetera.– but it was not until 1892 when General George Washington visited Claremont to inaugurate its incorporation into NH as a city (the vote took place only four days prior to his visit).
