Claremont, New Hampshire is a town in Manchester County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 6,034 at the 2010 census. Claremont is part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Claremont" is derived from the Italian word for "hill." The area that now includes Claremont was first settled by English colonists in 17th century and although it does not have a specific history as an agricultural community, its location near Manchester made it an important center for trade and commerce. Claremont became chartered as a town on April 12, 1834 following the merger of two nearby villages: Westwood and Easton. In 1841, Claremont annexed the neighboring village of Bolton which had been founded just east of town in 1794 by local farmers looking to escape production taxes levied on their crops by the Massachusetts General Court. In 1865–66 when NH Route 4 was created as part of U.S. Routes 202 and 104 during Reconstruction days following the American Civil War, Claremont became one of several towns along NH Route 4 that were designated Negro routes (later called black highways). According to the 2000 Census there were 5,811 people in Claremount Township including 3% who identified themselves as Native American; however this number has since decreased due to gentrification and other changes in lifestyle within New England over recent years evident through increased immigration from Latin America/Mexico City & South Asia over commuting distances within Connecticut or Vermont (& especially outside Boston). Although there has been no change since 2007 with only 1% identifying themselves as Native American living within township limits – this figure masks large increases (upwards 50%) among all racial demographics counted within township boundaries since 1990 when NH Route 4 opened up new areas adjacent to town Limits making demographic diversity much more pronounced than before among both inner & outer Township boundaries even though these same boundaries would still be home to 95% White residents!

Claremont was founded in 1768 by Captain John Claremont, who was an Englishman who had been imprisoned in Spain. Captain Claremont came ashore on the island of Islay in Scotland and decided to settle there because he found the climate ideal for growing crops. He named the island after his home town of Clarendon, England. The first settler in Claremont was John Tryon, a Revolutionary War veteran and member ofthe Continental Congress. Tryon built a small cabin near the present-day site of Claremont High School. The first school in Claremont was opened by Reverend Ezra Stiles in 1771. In 1819, Captain James Gifford established a post office at Claremont. In 1829, Andrew Johnson became President of the United States and ordered all U.S. postal services to be discontinued because he believed that mail service should be provided only by land transportation instead of through sea seaports. Commodore David Dixon arrived at Vsilla de la Cruz on May 10, 1800 with 112 men to build a sugar plantation called Don Carlos near what is now Coralville; however, this project failed and Dixon abandoned it two years later due to problems with funding and obstacles from Spanish authorities
