In 1805, Colonel John Manning built what became known as Manning's House on Park Street which still stands today as one of Claremont's most valuable assets. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s due to its natural resources and agricultural capabilities; many mills were built along the banks of the Merrimack River. By 1825, over 50 businesses had opened up in Claremont thanks to its thriving business district. For a time it appeared as if Clarenton would become an international center for textile production. However this dream ended when new transportation methods made shipping commodities such as textiles much more expensive than they had been before - this caused a rapid decline in local textile manufacturing throughout much of North America during the 1830s and 1840s. However, despite these setbacks, Claremont persisted through hard times until it reached its peak around 1870 with 797 residents according to US censuses (this number includes many refugees from across America who had come for economic opportunities). This prosperity however eventually faded away due to technological advances and competition from larger towns and cities; although some small businesses did continue to thrive into the 20th century (.
