The area was first settled by Native Americans, and early residents were known as the “Mountain Men.” In 1768, a group of Englishmen set out from Claremont on horseback in order to explore the new world. They discovered that the land they had been exploring was home to a large and powerful tribe of Indians called the Mohawk. The Englishmen decided to stay and fight against the Mohawks, but they were successful in defeating them and took their village with them. This event is considered one of the most important moments in Claremont’s history. In 1802, an American company named Houghton & Company purchased the land around Claremont from the Indians. The company began to develop it into a small town, and within a few years, it had become one of America’s leading towns. By 1830, Claremont had enough population growth for it to begin building its own school system. This movement helped make Claremont one of America’s leading communities during this time period. During World War II, Claremont played an important role in supplying food for Army troops stationed in Europe. In 1943, local farmers formed what is now known as Clarentham Creamery Company in order to produce milk for military personnel stationed abroad. After World War II ended, ClaremonT continued its success by becoming an internationally respected university town with many graduates going on to careers in business or education
