The town was chartered on February 14, 1792 by General George Washington as Westminster Township for the purpose of forming a garrison for his army during the French and Indian War. Claremont became an incorporated village on July 15, 1836 by act of Congress with a population of 248 residents. On March 26, 1865, Claremont became a city when it amalgamated with neighboring Uniontown to form Manchester-by-the-Sea. In 1853, an sawmill and gristmill were built in Claremont and continued to be used until 1924 when they were replaced by two more sawmills that remain in use today: one operated by Clearwater Paper Company (now known as PBF Energy) and another by Weir Manufacturing Company which closed in 2003 after years of decline. In 1915 there were only 5 houses in Claremont while now there are over 275 properties including many single family homes dating back to before World War II In 1969 Claremont High School opened its doors to students from all over New Hampshire as part of a larger consolidation effort across allManchester public schools that would result in some 400 new students enrolling at various levels from pre-kindergarten through college level In 2003 Clarence Heilman donated $5 million dollars towards making major renovations to both the high school campus as well as several other community buildings including Town Hall which has been renovated multiple times since its opening In 2006 Mayor Bob Lynch appointed Dragoons Crossroads Park Community Development Director who leads economic development programming for City government within park boundaries

The first true electronic data interchange was done between two Associated Electric Power Companies in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1881. At that time, electric lights were being used to store power for industrial users while the company regenerated it through a means of Coil Iron current passing through metal wires. The physical form of these early systems was a transformer with an open-grid rating developed by George Stephenson at English Electric Company. In 1912, GE built the world’s first magnetic tape recorder and loader. This machine could read 1 million records per minute on thin film recording tapes (termed “magnetic strips” at that time). It took about four hours to make a full load from start to finish. The machine cost $4000 and was used primarily for telephone companies. In 1946 General Electric introduced its own mag tape recorder and loader called the ABC Model T*. It had an 8 track cassette deck with playback speed up to 33 rpm and could hold up to 10 cassettes per reel (later increased to 16).* *Although not actually related to this paper, it is interesting that prior to GE's introduction of mag tape technology there were very few if any devices capable of storing large amounts of digital information on flexible plastic sheeting
