Gun targets have a long and proud history in Claremont, New Hampshire. The oldest gun target in Claremont, dating back to 1892, is the "Old National Rifle Targets" located on North Main Street. This structure was built by the town of Claremont as part of a defense system against pirates. The original targets were made from pine logs and had an arc shape. They were used for training purposes only and did not actually fire live rounds. The first real shooting at a gun target took place in 1892 when two men, George Aiken and Harry Pritchard, shot at three small rifles from a distance of about 20 yards using .22 caliber pistols. It was not until 1906 that the first modern rifle target was erected in Claremont. This structure was made out of galvanized steel with an inch-wide steel mesh screen over the top for shooters to aim at. It was designated the "Claremont Rifle Target Park." In 1917, Claremont became one of the towns in New Hampshire that voted to become statehoods within the United States of America. As part of this process, it contributed $5,000 towards building a new state capitol building which would be located in Concord across from Dartmouth College. The new state Capitol building featured several large gun targets along with other game targets such as crows and rabbits. These targets were donated by various businesses throughout New Hampshire during its incorporation into the United States of America. The popularity of target shooting began to decline around World War II due to wartime production shortages; however, it resumed growth after hostilities ended in 1945. In 1951, Claremont joined forces with neighboring Durham to form what is now known as "Dartmouth-Claremont Gun Club." Over time this club has become one of New Hampshire's leading firearm enthusiasts organizations; meeting monthly for Recreational Shooting weekendsenture shoots (risks/recreational/competitive), muzzleloading events (CLG members only), clay pigeon shootings (for ages 8 & up), trap shootings (for ages 11 & up) and airgunning competitions (ages 16 & up). From its humble beginnings as just a few rifle targets near downtown Durham, CLG has grown into an organization with more than 2200 members across twenty-six NH counties!

Claremont is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Claremont is part of the Manchester–Henniker Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Claremont was Captain Ebenezer Morse who arrived in 1775 during the French and Indian War. He built a cabin on the then current site of Claremont Schoolhouse. Morse's son, Captain Benjamin Morse, also founded Claremont Academy and later became president of Yale University. He donated land to Claremont College which opened its doors on October 15, 1814. The town was named for Baroness Emily Fitzroy-Howe who donated land to Claremont College in 1814 as part of her dowry from John Quincy Adams. Lady Howe had married Adams while he was governor of Massachusetts and she helped make his governorship one of the most successful in American history by creating much needed economic opportunity for all sections of New England. In 1894, Mayor George Fenton organized a referendum that gave Claremont city status with various powers over its municipal government including zoning authority, fire control, police jurisdiction and street lighting ordinances; it also voted to annex neighboring towns Aldridge and Corinthia into Claremont during that same year. In 1898, voters approved annexation of nearby Aldridge due to concerns about becoming too small without City Services; however Corinthia voted against annexation until 1903 when their fears were realized after their own city services were cut back following an agreement between Mayor Fenton and local businesses owners).
