Claremont, New Hampshire is a town in Butternut Valley District, in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. The population was 1,835 at the 2010 census. Claremont is home to Claremont College and the Claremont Colleges Foundation. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1630 as part of what became Derry Township, Plymouth County, Connecticut. It was chartered as a village on December 17, 1830 by James Logan and others with the name "Clarence". In 1845 it acquired its present name from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's friend and neighbor in Manchester suburb of West Newton named Clarendon (now part of Worcester). In 1870 it became a college town when Claremont College opened its doors. The townsite that now includes Claremont was included within Boston proper when Boston was founded in 1630 as an Indian trading post on Mountfitchet Hill by Dutch traders looking for fur trade routes to Asia. It remained part ofBoston until 1770 when it became one of three townships (the other two being Charlestown and Revere) within Plymouth County, Connecticut due to increasing population density along the eastern seaboard during this time period. On December 17, 1830, James Logan incorporated Clarence into Middlesex County as a Village under which it continued to operate until 1845 when control passed to Hartfordshire Territory comprising modern-day Hampshire County., following the creation of Hampden County from parts of Hartfordshire Territory on February 14th,. In 1870–71 Greenoughton Academy began operations asocational High School for boys in what is now downtown Clarendon; subsequent buildings include today’s undergraduate Schools Of Arts & Sciences at both colleges and postgraduate facilities including several research laboratories. One result has been an increase in enrollment at both schools from their initial student base numbering only 60 students each at incorporation through 1860; today’s total enrollment more than 900 students affairing all levels ranging from pre-kindergarten through graduate level courses.–[UPDATED OCTOBER 2009]
