The town was founded in 1796 by General John Sullivan and his wife Nathanael Greene. Claremont became a state capital in 1801. In 1830, it became the seat of government for Claremont County when that county was created from part of Manchester County. The Great Fire of 1836 destroyed much of Claremont and burned for several days, leaving many structures including a courthouse and jail unaffected. In 1850, Claremont became an incorporated village with a population of 375; however, it lost its autonomy in 1870 when it merged into Manchester Township. As an unincorporated community, Claremont had no municipal services until 1978 when it received municipal services from Manchester Township under the name "Manchester Borough". On April 14, 1984, the township renamed itself "Claremont" after its founder's home town (clarence) in England where he grew up before coming to America as a young man to take up arms against British forces during the American Revolution. Today, Claremont is known for its agricultural production and modest size relative to most towns in New Hampshire; although there are some large local businesses such as Tiffany’s Furniture & HomeStore which have presence throughout much of the town center., most residents commute to jobs outside of town or other villages nearby while still maintaining their own close-knit community atmosphere within their own homespun borough."
