Claremont is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. Claremont is part of the Manchester-Manchester Micropolitan Statistical Area. Claremont was founded in 1768 by Captain Nathaniel Hawthorne and his wife, Lucy Stone. It became a town on December 16, 1871, when it merged with Hanover Township. The first settler in what would become Claremont was Captain Nathaniel Hawthorne who arrived there from Connecticut on July 10th, 1768 with his family and twelve men under the command of Lieutenant John Floyd. They explored the area around present day Manchester until they found a suitable location for their settlement which they did on October 15th of that year. Captain Nathaniel Hawthorne had been born in Marblehead, Massachusetts in 1725 and he left home at age eighteen to start anew in what would be called “the wilderness” as he described it himself; an area which he thought would be perfect for him because it lacked any trees or other natural resources that could impede one's progress such as mines or rivers. On July 10th of that year while still residing in Hartford County (in modern day Connecticut), Captain Nathaniel Hawthorne married Lucy Stone whom he had met while working as surveyor for William Higginson and her brother Ebenezer Stone located near Holyoke Village (now Holyoke). The two set out from Hartford onJuly 25th following a journey of over 250 miles over rough terrain including crossings of streams and mountain ranges before arriving at what is now Hanover Township on December 16th of that year just days after becoming a townsite. There were only six families living within the boundaries of Claremont when it became a town which included those from Hanover Township along with some new settlers brought over by Colonel John Trumbull during his time as Mayor of Manchester (1795-1800). Among these newcomers were Solomon Pond who came from Westchester County, New York; Caleb Coffin who hailed from Rhode Island; Isaac Dunham who came from Watertown, Massachusetts; James Tuttle who came from Northampton County, Pennsylvania; Daniel Ketchum who lived near Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he worked as an apprentice seaman; Timothy Hardwick also known as Tubby Hardwick or Timmy Hardwick arrived soon after arrival having earlier emigrated to America aboard the ship "Nancy" but died en route back to England on September 5th 1800 aboard HMS Bounty off Cape St Vincent Gilbert Islands). He was buried there beneath Deck 11 officers' cotch deck next to midshipman Samuel Hyde Davenport and Mrs Davenport also childless passengers lost overboard during their voyage There are few details remaining about this passenger loss however DNA testing has since identified his remainshenger brothers Nicholas Christophers and Johann Gottfried Davenport both residents of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard at the time) . The settlement consisted of about fifty people, mostly farmers and their families, who built log cabins on the banks of the Piscataqua River. In 1801, Claremont became the site of New Hampshire's first public school, which helped to inspire other towns to establish schools throughout the state. The town's population gradually grew until it reached its peak in 1907 with over two thousand residents. However, due to economic reasons and dwindling resources, Claremont declined rapidly after World War I; by 1922 it had only seventy-five residents remaining. It has since slowly regained some lost ground and is now an important local community with a strong cultural presence.
