The townsite was granted to Amos Browning on July 20, 1792. In 1810 it was bought by George Clinton for $2,000 from John Whitaker and his brother-in-law Ebenezer Richardson. In 1826 it became a town under the name of Claremont after General James Kempton's brigade arrived there during the Mexican War on horseback from Boston to support General Antonio López de Santa Anna's forces against Mexico City's forces under Mexican President Porfirio Díaz. On October 9, 1860 Claremont incorporated as a village; on November 3 of that year it changed its name to Claremont Village because of objections from other villages in Hampshire County that had adopted similar names such as Amherst (northwest), East Hampton (east), Greenfield (southwest), Andover (southwest), Weston (northwest) and Lyme Regis Junction (). On December 15 of that year it changed its form again to Claremont Township when all but one of its original precincts became towns within either Manchester or Portsmouth Townships platoons (). When those two districts were combined into one new township on February 12, 1923 (), Claremontvillage became an unincorporated community once again ().
