By 1890 there were over 20 businesses in town and 2 schools providing education for children up to age 16. In 1893 Simeon Coleman built one of the first ever electric lights in America at his ranch northeast of town; this event helped spark development around town into what is now known as Old Town Sparks. In 1906 the ARCO Railroad closed its tracks through Sparks; however, local resident James Aderhold managed to keep them running until they were finally abandoned in 1957 due to public pressure. A new airport was built west of town during World War II and serves today as an international airport with passenger service both departing from and arriving from Reno International Airport
