In 1911, Sparks became a city when it annexed portions of Storey and Nye Counties to its boundaries. The city's history includes two occupations by American Indians: by the Paiute people in 1847 as part of their treaty with US officials; and by Custer’s last group of warriors as they retreated from Fort Sumner on July 6, 1876. In 1903, George Wickersham erected a post office at Sparks which served until 1907 when it was moved to Reno because there were no postal facilities within easy reach for small towns such as Sparks. In 1909, during World War I, the US Post Office Department decided that all small towns should have their own post office so that mail could be delivered more quickly and efficiently to military units located far away from larger cities such as New York City or Washington D.C.. The first post office opened at Sparks on October 1st., 1909 under name "Noyes". On May 15th., 1912 citizens of Reno petitioned for annexation into Sparks following an agreement between Mayor H J Giannini and then-Governor Harry S Truman whereby Reno would become a state capital if Silver State were admitted to the Union; however this request was not granted until November 3rd., 1912 due to opposition from other Colorado Valley communities who had also lobbied for incorporation into Sparks. On January 1st., 1915,[1] Spark's incorporation into Clark County began with 7 residents[2] who voted against incorporation due to fears that it would only serve as another bedroom community for Las Vegas while being economically difficult enough without help from government resources.[3] On October 1st., 1916[4], spark's first mayor Harry Arippa became only the 5th person ever elected mayor ofClarkCounty (the others being Emmett Walsh (mayor 1895-1910)), making him one of county's longest serving mayors up until present day.<5> By 1920,[6] sparks had reached its current population of 2,896 persons.<7> On February 14th., 1924,[8] sparks' first fire broke out during a monster blizzard which swept across much of North America resulting in $100K damage done to businesses including several stores situated around municipal square.<9> On April 19th., 1926,[10] sparks' first professional football game took place between local high school teams Blaze & Tigers<11>. The game ended with Blaze winning 10-0 despite giving up 4 touchdowns.<12>[13][14][15][16][17].
