The town's first mayor, John Fenton, had been elected to office on that date and his new gun was among the first pieces of equipment he took possession of. The earliest reference to guns being cleaned in Sparks comes from an advertisement placed by N.W. Goodrich & Sons for gunsmiths services in October 1872. At that time, it was common for shooters and their families to gather around a fire at night and clean firearms using soap and water. In 1903, the city acquired land at Seventh Street and Union Pacific Railroad tracks which served as its new police station. In response to this addition of law enforcement resources, Mayor Harry Wickersham designated November 9th as Gun Cleaning Day in honor of those who had helped make this event possible. On that day, citizens were encouraged to bring their Firearms into the station for polishing and lubrication before storage or use.

Sparks, Nevada is a small town in Clark County, Nevada. The population was 562 at the 2010 census. It is located on the edge of the Mojave Desert and it's known for its Sparks Municipal Airport. The first people to live in Sparks were Paiute Indians who arrived from Arizona in 1847. They built a trading post near what is now downtown Sparks and traded goods with the Mexicans and other Native Americans. In 1858, Brigham Young, founder of The Mormon Church, founded Utah's Salt Lake Valley Settlement which included parts of present-day Sparks. Other early settlers were white men prospecting for gold near today's Beale Street and Business Avenue. In 1861, construction began on the Reno & Las Vegas Railway which connected Reno with Carson City. This railroad helped spur economic development in Sparks while also providing access to new markets such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. The first post office was established in 1862; it was called "Pahrump". In 1865, the name changed to "Sparks", after Judge George Murtagh (1811-1865), an Irishman who served as a justice of the peace in Nevada Territory. 1 867 saw the opening of what is now Reno International Airport by ranchers Charles Henson and James Wickenheiser II on land donated by Superintendent John Crouchberry; this airport would later become home to both America West Airlines (now Delta Air Lines) and IATA Airport Services GroupInternational airports serving London Heathrow Terminal 3and Lisbon Portugal using Embraer E-JETs). In 1971–1972 extensive remodeling of downtown Sparks took place that replaced much older architecture with more modern styles including Art Deco/ Streamline Moderne buildings designed by architect Harry Wechtberger.. Development continued through most of the 1990s until 2001 when sparks lost its status as an incorporated city when county commissioners voted not to give it full funding for municipal services related to air quality control compliance under then newly implemented Measure R - dubbed "CITY FOR THE PEOPLE" or simply "Measure R". sparkstowne became unincorporated due largely to lack of support from business owners within Sparktowne itself for annexation into city limits following rules laid out by then county commissioners during their measure campaign promises

The first house in the town was built by W.H. Knight and his family in 1912. In 1931, Sparks became the capital of Nevada when it was moved from Carson City to its current location.
