Sparks is a city in Clark County, Nevada, United States. The population was 21,335 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1892 by John S. Sparks and others as a town on the eastern edge of what is now Carson City. It returned to its original name in 1912 when it merged with nearby Enterprise to become Sparks- Enterprise. It lost its charter as a city in 1978 but regained it in 1992 after being approved by voters. The first permanent settler in Sparks was John S. Sparks who arrived from Connecticut on October 15, 1892 along with his family and eight other pioneers. They built their homestead near present-day Central Avenue and US Route 637 (now US Route 50). A few years later they erected a log cabin which served as the first schoolhouse for students in the area. In 1893, they organized the Nevada Agricultural Society and became its president In 1903, brothers Samuel Wagenknecht and Harry Drucker organized the Nevada Manufacturing Company which manufactured shoes, saddles, harnesses and other items for horse traders across southern Nevada The company grew rapidly thanks to imported capital from San Francisco banker Marcus Daly Daly convinced him to invest $10 million into development of the new Reno–Sparks railroad that would provide an easy way to move goods between Reno and Carson City The project finally came online during 1909 when sparks incorporated as a municipality facilitating growth of downtown business scenes such as post office/bank/taverns etc., before eventually annexing nearby Enterprise . By 1920 there were over 1,000 businesses within close proximity of downtown . Growth continued through World War II with increased manufacturing activity due to war production needs such as planes , tanks and weapons plants ; however automobiles replaced most military production during this time period . However following the end of World War II many factory jobs left for lack of available replacement labor or competition elsewhere – creating problems for Sparks during this period . Starting around 1970 some younger people began coming into town looking for opportunities while older residents started leaving because they could no longer afford high costs associated with living outside town limits
In 1875, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill authorizing the creation of a new county in Sparks, Nevada. The county was named Nye County and was organized on February 14, 1875. The first election for sheriff took place on April 6, 1875 and John Wetherbee won the race by 1,527 votes to 284.
