The first Governor of Nevada Territory was John C. Fremont. In 1912, Reno incorporated as a city with a population of over 10,000 people. That year saw the introduction of automobiles into Reno – the first city in California to do so – and the development of downtown as an important commercial center. In 1925, Nevada Statehood was granted to NV; however, it did not become an official U.S. state until 1959. In 1950s and 1960s Reno experienced significant growth as casinos were built throughout Sparks (the original settlement), North Las Vegas (northwestLasVegas), Whitney (southwestLasVegas), Thunderbird (eastsideCanoga Park) and other areas withinNV’s expanding borders . In recent years there has been some regression back towards pre-gambling days following several high-profile scandals in local casinos
