In 1861, after weeks of negotiations between leaders of both factions within Mormonism – led by Brigham Young – an agreement was reached wherein Latter Day Saints would receive parcels of land north of Carson City while Mexican citizens who had settled near that location would be given tracts south of Carson City along with other benefits including food storage locations for their crops and access to water resources within easy reach for their livestock operations This deal effectively created pueblos or Native American villages near present day Reno where Mormons could farm their own soil but still maintain some control over aspects such as religious ceremonies and power struggles among themselves In 1865 following General William Taggart's disastrous attempt at invading California through northern Mexico (the so-called "Great Flaming Range Campaign"), which resulted in more than 350 killed or captured - including John Custer - Mormon officials decided it would be best if they withdrew all civilian populations from territories newly acquired by America booleanly providing they retained military command authority over these areas rather than abandon them completely Following this decision several thousand Mormons remaining in Arizona moved westward into what is now northeast Carson City Township on February 10, 1865 under provisionally organized militia forces commanded by Colonel George Armstrong Custer
