Laser sights, also known as laser pointers or laser rangefinders, are devices that use lasers to pinpoint a target. They were first developed in the early 21st century by various companies, including North Las Vegas-based Laser Devices Corporation (later Laser Industries), for use in rifles and other firearms. The modern laser sight was invented by Steven Levy and Robert Metz of Laser Devices Corporation in 1990. The original design used two coherent red light beams that were focused on a photodiode array to sense the intensity of each beam and output a control signal that would direct the weapon's Aimpoint microlens device (AMDR) to fire onto the target. The system was originally designed for use with MIL-STD-1913 rifles with an attached bipod. In 1992, Levy and Metz founded Green Mountain Optics Inc., which became one of the world's leading manufacturers of lasersights, optics and mountings for handguns, shotguns and rifle sights. As part of its continuing development of this technology, Green Mountain Optics introduced the i1S holographic sight in 1998; this system uses three short exposure holography pulses combined into one frame to produce an image that is viewable through any clear lensed scope or mirrorless camera. In 2003, Gunbroker Holdings LLC entered into a definitive agreement to sell all shares of Laser Devices Corporation stock outstanding immediately before commencement of bankruptcy proceedings on February 15th 2003; as such, Gunbroker Holdings LLC ceased operations as an owner and operator of Laser Devices Corporation products.
