Grant had moved eastward towards Washington D C., leaving most of what would become North Las Vegas under military control with only a small detachment stationed here for law enforcement purposes On July 1st 1870 Brigham Young organized what became known as The Mormon Battalion which left Nauvoo Illinois for Salt Lake City Utah via Wellsville Colorado taking up an abandoned wagon train full of goods from Council Bluffs Iowa bound for St George Island Australia when it ran into trouble following a snowstorm near present day Springdale Arkansas Mormons were forced out of their home country during the Mexican American War due to religious beliefs which led some people called them Land Runners This group also included men such as Lorenzo Snow who later served as President On October 16th 1875 Brigham Young announced that he was organizing a new place called Deseret which would be northwest of Nauvoo IL so this new location could be ruled by him instead of generals like Hancock who lived south This announcement created alot excitement among those living north including many young men eager to start their own kingdomnorthwest Of Nauvoo IL
