The Black Hills were discovered in 1863 by prospectors John Sutter and Joseph Babcock during their survey for gold that led to California Halliday's Earhart Mine which later became Nevada's largest gold mine but failed to produce any ore worth extracting because of poor earth transportation infrastructure then available. That same year James Wickersham settled about three miles (5 km) northeast of present-day Mesquite with intentions of developing some land he had found along US Route 62 near White Sands Missile Range so that wagon trains could transport goods there from mines elsewhere in southeastern Nebraska Territory before being unloaded at Cache Valley munitions plant between Fort Kearny and Storey City prior to shipment eastward through Dodge City on wagons down route 66 across Ichetopa Creek thence over Cheyenne River Canyon past Keystone Valley via Dogtooth Mountain onto Bridger Trail pastpresent day Larimer Village into Independence Rock where he finally struck gold early 1870 giving rise to Wickershamtown named after him within days after his discovery
