The city also developed into an important post-war boomtown with many new businesses being established during the postwar period including engineering companies such as McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corporation (later McDonnell Douglas Defense), Johnson Controls Inc., mainframe manufacturers GEICO Insurance Company (later GEICO), American Electric Power Company (AEP), Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) and others. In recent years growth has slowed slightly due to increased competition from Reno and Las Vegas among other cities within metropolitan areas across Nevada; however, Mesquite continues to enjoy strong economic development trends thanks to its rich history and numerous cultural attractions.

In 1849, Mormon pioneers started traveling to what is now Nevada from Utah looking for a new home. When they arrived at the end of Mexican holdings in present-day Mesquite, they discovered vast virgin land that would eventually become Nevada. The Mormons quickly developed a small community here and began trading with nearby Native Americans for goods and slaves. This early exploration and trade helped lay the foundation for what would be Mesquite’s long history as an important American city! Mormon missionaries gradually arrived here until 1851 when they set up shop on Mesa Street near today’s Convention Center – one of Mesquite’s first neighborhoods! Today, mesa street still plays an important role in local life with its mix of oldBrokerage storefronts dating back to Java Days (1899-1902), bars/restaurants built during prohibition years (1920-1929) and more recently office buildings like First Union Bank (2006). The original Mormon Settlement may have been located along what is now Pecos Road just east of I-25W; however, it did not take hold until after Brigham Young led his followers westward across Arizona into Mexico in 1847 hoping to find new territory for their religion – which had originated about two hundred miles south in Illinois! When California entered US control via Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo on February 14thMexican forces under General Carlos Manuel de Santa Anna destroyed approximately 130 LDS dwellings and Promontory Summit Missionary Station between January 12thand 15th 1848 while American forces were besieging Tucson! A few months later President James Kenedy dispatched Captain George Smith with 6 gunships under Commodore David Fenton Ensign[1]on March 20thto explore Oregon River Valley northeastward towards what are today Salt Lake Valley & Deseret Basin.[2][3][4] On April 7th Admiral William Trowbridge[5]completed his survey operations near modern day Las Vegas Newsprint Plantation on Henderson River adjacent to Rio Grande Railroad tracks leading northward into Spanish Fork Canyon]; mesa Street ran parallel thereto from Rinconada Hotel eastward past present day Bannock Avenue then turned northwest concurrent with Rife Road before reaching its current alignment today just south of I-25W.[6] As this area lay within Mexican National Property East Claimed By Us Under section 8vo [7], Captain Smith reported finding abundance of mules “with their tails hanging over their heads, teams driving off large quantitiesof game” he estimated at 1 million head or more including “hundreds or thousandsof buffalo” but no route could be found leading thence “safely into Oregon Country without great risk either from hostile nations or from inhabiting them by Christian people…we took all possible measures both against becoming apprehended by our enemies and against being carried away captive by them if we should reach our ultimate destination without success; but as nothing appeared favorableeither way we judged it best not to attempt any farther exploring than we were compelled to do by nature herself….We accordingly returned upon May 3rd having accomplished nothing worthy our attention beyond making discoveries which might tend either to physical security or political independence; excepting that some small Fortification erected at Cottonwood Bay near modern day Moapa Falls continued unchanged since our departure
